Thosaigh Simon ag obair le cré siar in 2015. Ó shin i leith, tá céim sa Cheirmeacht bainte amach aige ó Central Saint Martins i Londain, agus bíonn sé ag obair ar a chleachtas dealbhóireachta. De bharr an fhoinn saothair a dhéanamh dá bhaile féin, sheol sé raon earraí sa samhradh 2024 le húsáid sa bhaile, agus tá sé á fhorbairt go fóill. Léiríonn na saothair sin idéil an ealaíontóra agus cuimsíonn siad eilimintí a chuid próiseas agus saineolais – toradh na mblianta forbartha agus dhá ghné a chuid oibre atá idirnasctha agus a chothaíonn ar a chéile. Simon first started working with clay back in 2015, and since then has graduated from the Ceramics degree at Central Saint Martins in London, and has been working on his sculptural practice. He’s recently been developing a range of objects made to be used in the home, launched in summer 2024. These pieces reflect his ideals and incorporate elements of his processes and knowledge that he has developed over the years, the two strands of work are interlinked and feed off each other. Múnlaithe ar an roth potaireachta
Déanta as cruachréanna éagsúla, tá na saothair seo rothmhúnlaithe i mbaisceanna beaga, uaireanta le roinnt ábhar áitiúil brúite isteach sa chré sula múnlaítear é
Hand thrown on the potters wheel
Thrown in various stoneware bodies, these pieces are thrown in small batches, sometimes I’ll wedge local materials into the clay before throwing.
Teilgthe i bpoirceallán
Déantar na samhlacha agus na múnlaí de láimh sula ndéantar iad a theilgean i bpoirceallán, próiseas ina n-úsáidtear meascán ar leith d’uisce poircealláin agus dífhlocasach
Hand cast in porcelain
Models and moulds are made by hand before they are slip cast in porcelain, a process of using a special mix of porcelain, water, and deflocculant.
Áitheanna atmaisféaracha
Déanaim an chuid is mó de mo ghlónraí a bhácáil in áitheanna gáis, ceann amháin acu áith bharrlódála Rohde agus an ceann eile áith shóide bheag a rinne mé féin.
Fired in atmospheric kilns
I do most of my glaze firings in gas kilns, one of them is a top loading Rohde gas kiln, and the other is a little gas-soda kiln that I built myself.
Ábhair áitiúla
Trí ábhair áitiúla a bhailiú agus a phróiseáil, tugtar deis dom féin ceangal a dhéanamh idir an cheird agus an tírdhreach atá thart orainn agus saothair a chruthú a bhfuil éagsúlacht chaolchúiseach iontu nach bhfaightear ach san áit seo.
Local materials
Gathering and processing local materials allows both the work and me to connect to the surrounding landscape, and creates pieces with subtle variation which are unique to the place.
Déanta ar Oileán Chléire
Tá gach saothar déanta ar oileán beag amach ón gcósta, 3 mhíle ar fad agus 1 mhíle ar leithead. Seo an t-oileán is faide ó dheas in Éirinn agus is ceantar Gaeltachta é.
Made on Oileán Chléire
A small off shore island, 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. This is the southernmost island off of Ireland and is designated Gaeltacht, an Irish speaking place.
Táirgeadh mionscála
Déantar na saothair i mbaisceanna beaga – beidh gach ceann beagáinín difriúil lena chéile. Ar an mbealach sin, is féidir liom leanúint ar aghaidh raon mo chuid oibre a fhorbairt agus dul i bhfeabhas an t-am ar fad.
Small production
Pieces are made in small batches, each one will vary slightly from the last. This allows me to continue to develop the range of work and allows them to improve every time.
